Shoshone District (USGS)

This guide and checklist will help you to know what birds to look for in the Shoshone District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which is located in south central Idaho, north of the Snake River near Twin Falls and south of Sun Valley. A few species may only be found in the mountains north of the Shoshone District or south of the Snake River.

This guide and checklist will help you to know what birds to look for in south-central Idaho. Several Watchable Wildlife locations are within the area. These are places where it is more likely that you'll be able to see a greater variety of songbirds and upland game birds. The. Watchable Wildlife sites are Rock Creek Canyon/Shoshone Basin, Milner Reservoir, Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge, City of Rocks National Reserve, American Falls Dam and vicinity, Massacre Rocks State Park, Juniper Rest Area, and Hawkins Reservoir.

Birding hotspots at City of Rocks include: Indian Grove, North ForkCircle Creek, Window Rock, and Emery Pass Picnic Area. At Castle Rocks, try Stines Creek Picnic Area, Almo Creek Wetland Preserve, Edwards homesite, and around the Ranch House orchard. The checklist range includes the parks as well as the area south of the Elba-Almo Divide (including Cache Peak), north of the Utah state line, east of Junction Valley Road, and west of the Jim Sage Mountain crest.
